NPD’s North Island debut set to bring fairer fuel prices
South Island family-owned fuel retailer NPD has officially launched in the North Island opening its doors at NPD Te Rapa, Hamilton, NPD Westown in New Plymouth and NPD Wiri in Auckland. These are NPD’s first sites to open in the North Island with Palmerston North scheduled to open on the 10th June 2021.
Chief Executive Barry Sheridan says NPD is proud to have brought genuine competition to the North Island market. This means fair and balanced pump prices for all motorists throughout New Zealand.
“Genuine competition can only be a win for all motorists. Since we announced our launch into the North Island, we have seen a progressive reduction in the North Island pump prices, reducing the gap between higher prices in the North Island and lower prices in the South Island”.
“This is a similar trend we have experienced as we developed our retail network throughout the South Island. Whenever we’ve opened a new site, pump prices have dropped across that region”.
“Our fairer and more balanced pump pricing throughout New Zealand will ultimately bring more benefits to all motorists and families’ weekly budgets”.
All four NPD Self-Serve sites will be open 24/7, offering 91, 95, Diesel and the highly anticipated 100Plus – NPD’s premium 100 octane performance petrol.
NPD Self-Serve sites are a premium design and build with a strong focus on customers’ needs. They’re user-friendly with full weather protective canopies, multiple refueling locations, spacious forecourts with easy access, along with effective lighting for the safety and convenience of all motorists.
This is just the start of NPD’s expansion into the North Island. NPD’s first stage goal is to establish 32 sites throughout the North Island. NPD currently has further sites in the design and consent process and is actively seeking additional high-profile sites for development.
In the South Island, NPD has more than 80 sites with more scheduled to open during the year. Sheridan says “that with NPD’s southern network nearly complete, the time was right to start bringing further competition to the North Island.

Who is NPD?
NPD is a family-owned, Nelson-based fuel retailer. Previously known as Nelson Petroleum Distributors Ltd, NPD’s origins date back to the 1960s when the fledgling business was a contractor carrier for Mobil fuels and Castrol lubricants. In 1996, NPD became a wholesale distributor for Mobil – at that stage, it had 11 retail sites and two trucks. Now it is a major fuel distributor in its own right.
